Benjamin Franklin Hessom was born in Pittsburgh, Alleghney Co, PA in 1836. Very little is known of his early life except he lived in Lawrenceville, PA.
About 1856, he married Martha E Norman. He worked as a driver at that time. Later he went to work for an Oil Refinery owned by William McKelvry. In this time frame also he began caring for animals and became a veternarian. He practiced for many years, and when the state started to license veternarians in 1889, he was grandfathered in and his license is #13 in the Alleghny County records.
His wife died in 1874, and in 1880 he married Anna Marie Mahaffey, they lived in Bouquet, PA after he retired for the Oil Refinery in the early 1890's.
