Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in 1874 and spent her childhood on Prince Edward Island, Canada. She lived near Cavandish, in an old farmhouse with her grandmother. She always loved writing and constantly wrote poems and stories. When she was 14, she won a short story contest sponsered by the Montreal Star. She went to Dalhouste University for one year, but returned to Prinde Edward Island while still a teenager to teach school.
In 1911 she met and married the Reverend Ewan MacDonald. Her first novel was Anne of Green Gables which was published in 1908. It was an instant success and led to the writing of many others with the delightful Anne (with an e please) Shirley.
She died in 1942.
